Gain: Healthy teeth, saving a huge amount of money (as dentist’s services are very expensive) and less need to undergo the painful procedures of tooth repair
Cost: some seconds every day to put these valuable tips into practice
Yesterday I went to a new dentist and she told me that the enamel of my teeth has become thinner. It was nothing new for me because I knew this from another dentist but the only thing he told me was to come regularly to his dental surgery to get external cervix fillings! He didn’t mention anything about prevention measures and it was my mistake not to ask about how to prevent tooth demineralization and erosion from happening.
Luckily, my new dentist told me what to do so that there will be less need to see her in the future. And that’s what a good doctor does because “Prevention is better than cure”.
So these are the tips I got from her:
- After eating fruit and vegetables rinse your mouth out with one cup of water and a spoon of baking soda dissolved in it. The baking soda will neutralize the fruit acids which cause enamel erosion. This applies even more if you eat something highly acidic like lemons. And I am a big fan of lemons! If only I had known about that earlier, this would have saved me a lot of trouble and money for cavity fillings.
- Do not clean your teeth with toothpaste for two hours after eating fruit and vegetables as this will speed up the enamel erosion
- Brush your teeth with a dry toothbrush
- If you already have thinner enamel and your teeth are sensitive, use a very soft toothbrush. The dentist recommended the Swiss Curaprox 5460 Ultra soft toothbrush.
